US & Australian jobs on MrWeb
The tables on this page are
based on the - still relatively
small - number of Australian and
US jobs advertised on MrWeb.
Figures for the ‘2nd 1/2’ cover
from 1st July up to 5th Nov.
Although bases for any conclusions
are low, it’s obvious that US salaries
are higher across the board than for
equivalent jobs in the UK. Mean
salaries are fractionally lower so far in
the second half of the year than they
were in the first, but this may not be
very significant - when we have a
longer term trend and a few more jobs
listed we may be able to look back on
this and spot something, and even
appear wise with the benefit of
hindsight :)
Australian salaries for ADs and
Directors are generally lower than in
the UK, whereas client side positions
at middle and senior levels appear to
be better paid. Salaries for REs, SREs
and agency side Project Managers
in Australia also look very healthy of
late - this is partly due however to
the exchange rate, which has moved
from c.$AUD2.6 to the £ earlier in
the year (pretty stable in 2002 also)
to only 2.33 as of this week. It may
also reflect the fact that a slightly
higher proportion of our Australian
jobs don’t show salaries - so those
used for the calculation would tend
to be the better paid. Certainly it’s
been hitherto accepted that working
in Australia generally if not always
means trading a little of one’s salary
(vs UK) for a better quality of life and
a lower cost of living, so the figures
are slightly surprising.

NOTE
ON US JOB
TITLES |
|
The above job titles are not often used in the US (although they are in Australia). Each US vacancy is coded with reference to the job description, in particular the responsibilities of the position and the number of years of experience sought. For example, most VPs will be coded as AD but some as Director level as it’s a very wide category in the US. Rough American equivalents are shown below. |
